Wolski, Lee, Bailey to play Manito concerts

Violinist Mateusz Wolski, concertmaster with the Spokane Symphony, and violist Jessica Lee, will join cellist Zuill Bailey for two nights of music under the stars at Manito Park.

Connoisseur Concerts will celebrate the 25th edition of Mozart on a Summer’s Eve, with W.A. Mozart’s masterwork Divertimento for String Trio performed by Wolski, Lee and Bailey, artistic director of the Northwest Bach Festival. Lee is primarily a violinist – she’s a member of the Johannes String Quartet – but will play viola on the Mozart piece.

The second half of the program will feature Verne Windham conducting the Connoisseus Concerts’ Wind Ensemble in audience favorites.

The concerts will be at 7 p.m. July 14 and 15 on the lawn east of the Duncan Gardens, just off the Tekoa Street entrance. (If it rains, the festivities move to St. John’s Cathedral.) Tickets are on sale now through TicketsWest. Seats on the grass will set you back only $10 a person. For $30, get a seat at a table and enjoy dessert and coffee from Luna. For extra, call Luna at (509) 448-2383 ahead of time and order dinner for delivery to the park.

Return of the drive in

Has the death of the drive-in movie theater been exaggerated? Perhaps.

The Auto Vue Drive In, in Colville, was at death’s door two years ago. Now, owners are talking about being open for business this summer – perhaps by June.

Meantime, closer to home, a new portable drive-in experience will show movies in two Spokane locations this summer.

Movies will be shown beginning June 9 on a 55-foot screen and simulcast over FM radio. On Tuesdays, load up the car and head to 4307 E. Mt. Spokane Park Drive (behind Yoke’s). Wednesdays, the action is at the Spokane Raceway, 750 N. Hayford Road in Airway Heights.

The North Side schedule features “Big Hero 6” (June 9), “Footloose” (June 23), “Man of Steel” (July 7), “Top Gun” (July 21), “The Sandlot” (Aug. 4) and “Dirty Dancing” (Aug. 18). In Airway Heights, the selections take on a mostly automotive theme: “Talladega Nights” (June 10), “Days of Thunder” (June 24), “Fast & Furious” (July 8), “Monsters University” (July 22), “Grease” (Aug. 5) and “American Graffiti” (Aug. 19).

Movies start at dusk – 9 to 9:15 p.m., roughly – with gates open at 7 p.m.

Admission for outdoor seating is $5 for adults, $4 for children (7 to 12) and free for those 6 and younger. Bringing a carload? It’s $20 for four or more people, or $5 a person for three or fewer.
