Aguero tops Premier League scoring

SOCCER: Sergio Aguero finished as the top scorer with 26 goals, his last sealing Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Southampton on Sunday as the Premier League concluded play.

Aguero scored five more goals than his nearest rival, Harry Kane, yet wasn’t selected in the Premier League’s team of the season.

• Arsenal secured a third-place finish, and direct qualification for the Champions League group stage, by beating West Bromwich Albion 4-1. Liverpool lost 6-1 at Stoke but still qualified for the Europa League along with Tottenham, which won 1-0 at Everton to move to fifth above Liverpool.

• Frank Lampard of Manchester City (New York FC) and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool (L.A. Galaxy) both scored in their final appearances before moving to the United States to play in MLS. The pair played in a combined 1,319 Premier League games. Lampard scored at least six goals in each of the last 13 Premier League campaigns.

• Didier Drogba, who was captaining Chelsea in his final game for the club, was substituted in the first half and was raised aloft by his teammates to the touchline. The referee was happy to allow Drogba to lap up the acclaim of the crowd as he applauded fans and removed his shirt before being replaced by Diego Costa.

• Hull, Queens Park Rangers and Burnley were relegated. Hull needed to beat Manchester United to stand a chance of staying up and could only draw 0-0. The fate of the other two was already sealed.

Contador still leads; Landa wins stage

MICELLANY: Alberto Contador extended his overall lead of cycling’s Giro d’Italia by seven seconds after finishing third behind winner Mikel Landa on a mountainous 15th stage.

Landa attacked on the final steep section of the climb up to the Madonna Di Campiglio ski resort to claim his first Grand Tour stage victory. Today is a rest day, before the race continues in the mountains.

Oashawa beats Quebec: Defenseman Stephen Desrocher scored at 18:07 of overtime to give the Ontario Hockey League champion Oshawa Generals (2-0) a 5-4 victory over the host Quebec Remparts (1-1) in the Memorial Cup.

Rimouski will play Kelowna tonight; both are 0-1.

Peterson saying home:A person with knowledge of the situation said that running back Adrian Peterson has informed Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer that he will not be attending optional practices that begin Tuesday.

Peterson has been unhappy with the Vikings for a perceived lack of support from within the organization while he addressed child abuse charges last season.

Maryland women repeat as lacrosse champions: Taylor Cummings and Megan Whittle led Maryland to its second straight NCAA women’s lacrosse title and record 12th overall, each scoring three goals in the Terrapins’ 9-8 comeback victory over North Carolina in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Maryland (21-1) overcame a three-goal halftime deficit.
