UI golfer Kim in fifth place at NCAA championships

University of Idaho golfer Leilanie Kim fired a third-round 71 on Sunday and was tied for fifth place at the NCAA championships at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.

Kim was at 4-over 220, four strokes behind Emma Talley of Alabama. While those two completed their third rounds, many golfers had not when play was suspended. The round is to be completed this morning. The top nine not on an advancing team will then play in the fourth round later today, which will determine the individual champion.

Washington State’s Alivia Brown fired a 76 and was tied for 114th place at 246.

After the third round the field of 24 teams will be cut to 15. The top eight teams following the fourth round advance to Tuesday’s match play. Washington is currently eighth.

Cooper Elliott’s one-out sacrifice fly scored Derek Chapman in the 11th inning to give Washington State a 3-2 victory over Stanford in a regular-season finale played in Pullman.

The Cougars finished 29-27 overall, 11-19 in Pac-12 play. The 29 wins are the most for WSU since collecting 37 in 2010.

Chapman doubled to lead off the 11th and was sacrificed to third by P.J. Jones. The Cardinal (24-32, 9-21) intentionally walked the bases full, setting up Elliott’s winning fly ball to right field as Chapman scored standing up.

The Cougars scored twice in the sixth to tie on Shane Matheny’s single that brought home Shea Donlin, who had doubled, and Jones’ RBI single that scored Tyler McDowell.

Closer Ian Hamilton (1-4) worked a career-high 5 2/3 innings for the win. Jones finished with four hits and Donlin three.

• Austin Rei homered to give Washington (28-25, 13-16 Pac-12) a 1-0 victory over Utah (16-36-1, 7-22-1) in Seattle in a season-ender.
