Chicago Bears DE Ray McDonald arrested for domestic violance, realeased

NFL: The Chicago Bears have released defensive end Ray McDonald following a domestic violence arrest in Northern California that police say stemmed from him assaulting a woman who was holding a baby.

Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke reports that McDonald was taken into custody at 7 a.m. Monday on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment. Police say he assaulted a woman while she was holding a baby at his home in Santa Clara. “We believe in second chances, but when we signed Ray we were very clear what our expectations were if he was to remain a Bear,” General Manager Ryan Pace said in the statement. “He was not able to meet the standard and the decision was made to release him.”

Chaves top rookie in Indianpolis 500

AUTO RACING: Gabby Chaves was selected he Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year after finishing 16th in Sunday’s race.

The 21-year-old Columbian-American started in 26th position. He moved up as high at eighth place from the middle of row nine.

Juan Pablo Montoya earned $2,449,055 for his victory, part of a $13,397,315 overall purse.

Denver wins NCAA men’s lacrosse title

NCAA FINALS: Denver won its first NCAA men’s lacrosse championship, beating Maryland 10-5 in Philadelphia behind five goals from senior Wesley Berg.

It gave coach Bill Tierney his record seventh title, six with Princeton.

The fourth-seeded Pioneers (17-2) beat top-seeded Notre Dame in overtime in the semifinals on Saturday.

Women’s tennis: Jamie Loeb became North Carolina’s first NCAA singles tennis champion, beating second-seeded Carol Zhao of Stanford 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in Waco, Texas. Loeb denied Stanford its 15th women’s singles title in this final between sophomores.

Men’s tennis: Virginia’s Ryan Shane won the men’s singles title, rallying past Wake Forest freshman Noah Rubin 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1, also in Waco.

The hard-hitting Shane is the second Virginia player to win the title, following Somdev Devvarman in 2007 and 2008.

MISCELLANY: Matt Busche and Megan Guarnier each won their second road national championship.

Busche, riding for Trek Factory Racing, held off Joe Dombrowski of Cannondale-Garmin in a dramatic duel through the rain in Chattanooga, Tenn.

In the women’s race, Guarnier took advantage of a strong pace set by Boels Dolmans teammate Evie Stevens near the end of the downtown finishing circuits. She then outsprint Coryn Rivera of UnitedHealthcare.

Norwich back in Premier League: Norwich secured an immediate return to the Premier League by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the second-tier soccer playoff final in London.

Norwich joins already-promoted Watford and Bournemouth in next season’s Premier League.
