Hired The Orlando Magic have hired former player Scott Skiles as their next head coach. General manager Rob Hennigan introduced Skiles as the franchise’s 12th coach Friday, beginning what they hope will be the turning point in their latest rebuilding project. Skiles, 51, was a member of the Magic’s inaugural team in 1989-90. A 13-year veteran NBA coach, he owns a 443-433 overall coaching record after stops in Phoenix, Chicago and Milwaukee. The Magic have won 25 or fewer games for three straight seasons.

Suspended Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard was suspended without pay for one game after getting his fourth flagrant foul point in the postseason. He will serve the suspension in the first game next season.

Purchased The Los Angeles Lakers have completed the purchase of five acres in El Segundo, California, that will be the site of their new team headquarters. The building, set to be completed in early 2017, will include their training complex, team offices and a 750-seat gym where the Lakers’ D-League affiliate will play its home games.

Booted Police say John Wall was kicked off a flight in Las Vegas on Tuesday after a disturbance was reported. One of the people the Washington Wizards’ guard was with got into a verbal fight with another passenger. Authorities say that’s when the airline requested Wall and his group be removed from the plane.

Announced The Southeastern Conference has adopted a rule prohibiting its schools from enrolling student-athletes with “serious misconduct” issues at previous colleges. The league defined serious misconduct as “sexual assault, domestic violence or other forms of sexual violence.”

Banned St. Louis Rams running back Trey Watts has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
