SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Colin Kaepernick is out of the 49ers starting quarterback job for the first time since he seized that role three years ago.

Blaine Gabbert has been tabbed to start Sunday for the last-place 49ers when the Atlanta Falcons visit Levi’s Stadium, a league source said Monday.

Coach Jim Tomsula was noncommittal about Kaepernick’s status earlier Monday, as was the case after Sunday’s 27-6 loss at St. Louis.

The NFL’s trade deadline is Tuesday at 1 p.m., and whether Kaepernick is being shopped, he was told 24 hours before that he was getting benched.
