Better bulbs available

Regarding the replacement of sodium lights with LEDs on the South Hill (Oct. 21): The warm glow of sodium vapor lamps is essential to the ambiance of historic neighborhoods. But these old lamps use energy needlessly and are expensive to maintain.

Modern LEDs are a marvel of efficiency and durability, but improperly designed lights can be offensive and a major annoyance. LED manufacturers have quickly responded by developing warm LEDs that are inviting and extremely efficient. LED light is directed only where needed though the use of lenses built into the fixture.

If Avista had been attentive to the South Hill neighborhood, they could have installed LEDs with warm, inviting light delivered where needed, creating safer streets while saving up to 75 percent or more on energy costs. LEDs don’t have to have glaring white/blue light anymore. There is no reason to have stray light assaulting neighboring homes.

LEDs are a highly energy efficient technology that puts pleasing light where needed and keeps it from where it isn’t. Shame on Avista for botching this effort. They ought to know more than anyone how to select and install this amazing technology to benefit themselves, the planet and the neighbors who live with it.
