Men’s soccer: Whitworth captures NWC title

Karl Muelheims scored his Northwest Conference-leading 20th goal of the season in the sixth minute and Eric Espinoza and Alfredo Omelas added goals as ninth-ranked Whitworth clinched its second straight NWC title with a 3-1 win over Whitman Saturday in Walla Walla.

The Pirates completed the season sweep of the Missionaries (3-13-2, 2-10-2) and captured its eighth conference title in the past 12 years.

Whitworth (16-1-1, 12-1-1) reached the round of 16 in last year’s NCAA Division III tournament. This year’s field will be announced on Monday.

CCS tops Whatcom at NWAC tournament

Jonathan Cortez scored two of Community Colleges of Spokane’s four second-half goals and the Sasquatch beat Whatcom 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at Spokane Falls Community College.

Eric Sanchez-Flores, Breno Rocha and Joseph Lea added goals for CCS.

The Sasquatch (12-4-4) will play Tacoma in the semifinals next Saturday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington. Tacoma advanced with a win over Clark.

Whatcom finished its season with a 10-5-4 record.
