Newsmakers: Rockies shortstop Reyes arrested in Hawaii

From staff and wire reports

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested after an argument with his wife that police said turned physical at a resort in Hawaii. Maui police said in a statement Tuesday that Reyes’ wife was treated by medics at the scene then transported to a hospital for treatment. Cardinals’ Lance Lynn has Tommy John surgery

Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn had surprise Tommy John surgery and will be sidelined all of next season. The operation repaired a torn ulnar collateral ligament while having the ulnar nerve transposed and bone chips removed. Lynn missed a couple of starts in June with a forearm strain. Lynn was 12-11 with a 3.03 ERA last season. He was an All-Star in 2012 and has three straight seasons of 30 or more starts. He’s among 16 pitchers to work 175 or more innings each of the last four years. The loss of Lynn is the latest blow to the N.L. Central champion Cardinals’ pitching depth.

Surgery sidelines skier Julia Mancuso

American skier Julia Mancuso will have season-ending hip surgery in Vail, Colorado. The four-time Olympic medalist hopes to be back in March for some freeskiing. She’s taking a conservative approach in her recovery because, “if I were to try to push through, get more treatments and try to ski this season, I would just be setting myself back toward the real goal.” And the real goal, she said, is being healthy for the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea.

The Chicago White Sox have hired former Cubs manager Rick Renteria as their bench coach. Renteria managed the Cubs to 73 wins in 2014. The North Siders were planning to bring him back for a second season before Joe Maddon became available. The White Sox reached out to Renteria about joining the organization about a year ago, but general manager Rick Hahn said the timing “was not right.” With Mark Parent being let go as bench coach following this season, it created an opening. Renteria is expected to work with young position players like Carlos Sanchez, Avisail Garcia and Trayce Thompson.

The 20-year-old scored an MLS rookie record 17 goals in 27 games during the regular season for the expansion team. He was selected from UConn with the top pick in this year’s draft. The league said that Larin received 276 percent of combined team, media and player votes, which total 300 percent
