Some schools, parks and libraries closed Friday

Some school districts have already announced closures for Friday, while others will be partially open.

Cheney School District has canceled classes because several schools are without power and downed trees and power lines are still creating hazards. All activities and parent conferences are also canceled.

There will be no school Friday for students attending Spokane Public Schools. However, five schools will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide meals, heat, Internet access and outlets for charging devices.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meals are free. District spokesman Kevin Morrison said an anonymous organization made a donation to cover the cost of meals for adults.

The open schools are: Rogers High School, 1622 E. Wellesley; Ferris High School, 3020 E. 37th Ave.; Salk Middle School, 6411 N. Alberta St.; Glover Middle School, 2404 W. Longfellow Ave.; and Grant Elementary, 1300 E. Ninth Ave.

Classes in the Medical Lake and East Valley school districts have also been canceled. Saint George’s school will be closed. There is no school in the Mead School District, and conferences have been canceled.

All Central Valley schools will be open Friday with the exception of Bowdish Middle School, Opportunity Elementary and South Pines Elementary. The condition of those three schools will be reevaluated at 6 a.m. Friday for a final determination on classes.

West Valley High School, City School and Centennial Middle School will hold classes Friday. The West Valley School District had already planned to close the elementary schools for parent conferences on Friday. Those conferences have been canceled and will be rescheduled.

The city of Spokane has closed two North Side parks due to downed trees. Byrne Park near Walton and Lidgerwood is closed, as is Webster Park near Walton and “I” Street.

The Riverfront Park Ice Palace is also closed, and classes at the Corbin Art Center have been canceled because the building lacks power. If power is restored by Saturday the Turkey Jubilee class will go ahead as scheduled.

Three Spokane County Library District locations are still without power and will be closed Friday. The closed branches are Argonne, Deer Park and Medical Lake.
