Area roundup: Whitworth men’s soccer improves to 9-0

Karl Muelheims, Jonah Snyder and Sam McKay scored and the Whitworth men’s soccer team kept its perfect record intact Friday with a 3-0 Northwest Conference win over Pacific in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Rylan Berriman assisted on the first two goals and Austin Cassity assisted on McKay’s 79th-minute goal.

The Boxers fell to 3-7 and 1-4 in the NWC. The Pirates (9-0, 5-0) play at George Fox on Sunday.

• Ben White scored in the first half and assisted on Christo Michaelson’s second-half goal as Gonzaga topped Bradley (4-6) 2-0 in a nonconference match in Peoria, Illinois.

GU (5-4-1) plays at Denver on Monday before starting its West Coast Conference schedule at Portland on Oct. 11.

• Danny Gavin’s diving header in the 82nd minute lifted No. 15 Washington (5-1-3, 1-0) past San Diego State (5-2-2, 0-1) 1-0 in a Pac-12 Conference opener in Seattle.

Women’s soccer

Savannah Hoekstra scored two first-half goals and Eastern Washington ran its winning streak to seven matches with a 3-1 Big Sky Conference win over Sacramento State (4-7, 2-1) in Cheney.

The winning streak is the longest in program history. Chloe Williams also scored in the first half for the Eagles (9-1-1, 3-0), who held a 21-15 shots advantage. EWU hosts Big Sky foe Portland State Sunday at 1.

• Olivia Baggerly’s unassisted goal in the 30th minute was the difference in Idaho’s 1-0 Big Sky Conference win over Portland State (3-8, 1-2) in Moscow, Idaho.

It was the first of four straight home matches for the Vandals (7-4-1, 3-0). They take on Sacramento State Sunday at 1.

Volleyball

Samantha Bricio had 13 kills, 15 digs and five blocks and No. 2 Southern California (15-0, 3-0) swept Washington State in a Pac-12 Conference match in Los Angeles. Scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-21.

Kyra Holt had a team-high seven kills for the Cougars (12-3, 1-2).

• Marie Rewick and Morgan Mendicino had 11 kills apiece and Pacific (3-9, 1-4) upset Whitworth (10-4, 4-1) in five sets in a Northwest Conference match in Forest Grove, Oregon. Scores were 22-25, 25-22, 28-26, 17-25 and 15-11.

Cassandra Mendoza had 18 kills and 10 digs for the Pirates.

• Penny Gwynn had 12 kills and Brenna Meehan added eight kills and six aces as North Idaho (10-11, 2-1) swept Utah State in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match in Coeur d’Alene. Scores were 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14.

Cross country

The Gonzaga women took sixth place to lead area teams at the Washington Invitational at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle.

Jessica Mildes was the Bulldogs’ top finisher. She took 26th place after covering the 6,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 25.3 seconds.

Eastern Washington, which took seventh place, was led by Sarah Reiter, who took 16th in 20:15.6. Washington State took ninth.

For the men, Washington State’s John Whelan took 13th with an 8,000 time of 23:34.4. WSU took eighth, Gonzaga was ninth and Eastern Washington was 11th.

GSL girls soccer

Hannah Plank and Corynn Vigil scored goals and Gonzaga Prep extended its winning streak to five matches with a 3-1 win at Central Valley (5-3, 2-2). The Bullpups (6-2, 4-0) took an early 1-0 lead after benefitting from an own goal in the eighth minute. The Bears’ lone goal came from Kaelyn Barnes in the 52nd minute.

• Piper Lawson scored off a corner kick in the 79th minute to break a 2-all tie and give University a 3-2 win over Lewis and Clark at Hart Field. Brooke Berg and Julia Adair also scored for University (6-3, 3-1). Haley Elkin and Alli Schoultz scored for Lewis and Clark (4-5, 0-4).

• Alea Acosta scored twice, Katie Green had two assists and Mead topped visiting Shadle Park (3-7, 1-3) 5-1. Alex Chambers, Rachel Benneweis and Katie Crowley also scored for the Panthers (8-1, 3-1).

• Brittney Sanders, Sierra Poquette and Amber Hickman all scored to guide Mt. Spokane past North Central (1-6, 0-4) 3-0 at NC. The Wildcats (8-1, 3-1) held a commanding 17-2 shots advantage.

• Ferris recorded four goals from four players in the first 6 minutes and eased past host Rogers (0-4, 0-4) 5-0. Bria Bowton, Sydney Clements, Alexis Murphy, McKenna Cutler and Katie Uphus all scored for the Saxons (6-3, 4-0).
