No. 20 WSU tops UCLA in women’s soccer before 1,305

Kaitlyn Johnson scored a tiebreaking goal and assisted on Kourtney Guetlein’s insurance score, and No. 20 Washington State defeated UCLA 4-2 before 1,305 in Pullman, the second-largest crowd in program history.

Cara Wegner had a goal and an assist and Beau Bremer also scored for the Cougars (9-2-0, 2-1-0 Pac-12) in the win over the Bruins (5-6-0, 1-2-0).

• Tasha Luu’s goal in the final minute of the first half provided Eastern Washington (10-1-1, 4-0 Big Sky) with a school-record 10th victory of the season, 1-0 over Portland State (3-9-0, 1-3) in Cheney.

• Clara Gomez’s first goal, coming in the first half, lifted host Idaho (8-4-1, 4-0-0 Big Sky) to a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State (4-8-0, 2-2-0).

• Pacific Lutheran (8-1-1, 4-1-1 NWC) beat Whitworth (5-6-0, 3-4-0) 2-0.

Men’s soccer

Sam Engle scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to lift No. 5 Whitworth (9-0-1, 6-0-1 NWC) to a 1-1 tie with George Fox (5-6-1, 2-3-1) in Newberg, Oregon.

Volleyball

No. 11 UCLA (11-3, 2-2 Pac-12) scored a 25-20, 25-18, 30-28 victory over Washington State (12-4, 1-3) in Los Angeles. WSU’s Kyra Holt had 15 kills.

• No. 2 USC (16-0, 4-0 Pac-12) beat No. 5 Washington (13-1, 3-1) in Los Angeles 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 33-31.

Men’s golf

Idaho won the Southern Dunes tournament in Maricopa, Arizona, by five shots at 4 under over three rounds. Rylee Iacolucci tied for second at 4 under to lead the Vandals, six shots back of the medalist.

Women’s golf

Whitworth placed sixth in the Culturame Classic in Aloha, Oregon. George Fox won. Chelsea Bayley was Whitworth’s top golfer, in 13th place.

Hockey

Nelson (4-4-0-0, 8) beat host Spokane (2-5-0-3, 7) in a KIJHL game 2-0.

Basketball

Eastern Washington’s Venky Jois was chosen as the MVP in the Big Sky’s first men’s preseason All-Conference team. He was joined by teammate Bogdan Bliznyuk.

EWU’s Hayley Hodgins was chosen to the women’s team.
