Area roundup: EWU volleyball remains perfect in Big Sky

Ana Jakovlievic had 16 kills in leading Eastern Washington to a 25-21, 25-16, 14-25, 25-19 victory over Sacramento State (16-4, 3-2) on Thursday night in Cheney to remain undefeated in Big Sky volleyball play.

Jakovlievic turned in a hitting percentage of .351. Alexis Wesley and Alliei Schmacher added eight kills each while Nicole Rigoni turned in her fourth double-double this season with 26 assists and a career-high 13 digs for the Eagles (10-6, 5-0).

Loyola Marymount outlasted Gonzaga 14-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9 in a West Coast Conference match in Spokane.

Savannah Blinn recorded a blistering hitting percentage of .531 in recording 19 kills for the host Bulldogs (11-7, 2-3).

Blinn is now No. 2 in career kills with 1,522 at Gonzaga, passing Linda Bushinkski, who racked up 1,505 kills from 1984-88. Blinn’s total is the seventh-highest among active players in Division I.

Jordan Gasser added 13 kills on .300 hitting as the Gonzaga hit .350 overall. Faith Smith added 28 assists and Macee Utecht 15 digs.

The Lions (11-6, 2-3) hit .220, led by Rachelle Suaava’s 15 on .290 and Amber Mirabello’s 12 on .556.

Idaho took a five-set victory over visiting Portland State, 23-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10 in Moscow.

Tineke Bierma had 18 kills on .333 hitting, Katelyn Peterson 16 (.325) and Kaela Straw 13 (.267) for the Vandals. Meredith Coba added 31 assists and Jenna Ellis 25 digs. Peterson picked up a double-double with 16 digs.

North Idaho College defeated Snow 24-26, 21-25, 17-25 in Ephraim, Utah.

Brenna Meehan had 15 kills on .323 hitting and Brooke Bell nine on .412. The team hit .244. Brittany Gay added 32 assists and Hannah Christianson 10 digs.

Hockey

The Western Hockey League suspended Spokane Chiefs forward Riley Whittingham for three games under supplemental discipline at Victoria on Oct. 6. He has served one game.

Women’s golf

Michelle Kim was chosen Big Sky Women’s Golfer of the Week for the second time this season. Kim shot a 2-over-par 218 over three rounds in finishing eighth in the New Mexico State Aggies Invitation.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock have added defensive back Lorenzo White Jr. to their 2016 roster. White played college ball Central Michigan. He played for the Tri-Cities Fever last season.
