Man killed in apparent hunting accident near Colfax

A man died in an apparent hunting accident near Colfax Saturday morning.

Members of the man’s hunting party called 911 just before 8 a.m. to report that a man had been accidentally shot, according to a news release from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office. The group was in a remote area near Glenwood Road about four miles east of Colfax and the man’s companions performed CPR with the help of 911 operators until help arrived.

The man has been identified as Nicholas Nava-Farias, 31, of Kennewick. Officials believe Nava-Farias was hit by a single round from a muzzleloader rifle accidentally fired by a member of his group.

The incident is under investigation by the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
