Whitworth football team shines on defense, tops Puget Sound

Duke DeGaetano ran for 159 yards and a score on 46 carries and Whitworth’s defense shined in windy and rainy conditions in a 24-7 Northwest Conference win over Puget Sound Saturday at Baker Stadium in Tacoma.

The Pirates racked up seven sacks, six coming in the second half, and stopped the Loggers (2-2, 1-1) on all 14 third-down attempts and both fourth-down attempts. Puget Sound was limited to 196 yards of total offense.

Whitworth quarterback Ian Kolste added a rushing score and a passing touchdown. The Pirates (5-0, 2-0) host NWC foe Pacific Lutheran at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Willamette 10, Pacific Lutheran 9: Jimmy Sharpe’s 1-yard touchdown plunge early in the fourth held up and the Bearcats (1-3, 1-1) edged the Lutes (0-4, 0-2) in an NWC game in Puyallup, Washington.

S.D. School of Mines 49, Central Washington 44: Devin Nixon ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns and the Hardrockers (4-2, 1-1) withstood the Wildcats’ late-game rally and beat Central Washington (3-3, 1-1) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game in Ellensburg.

Eastern Oregon 28, No. 4 Carroll 21: Zach Bartlow ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns and the Mountaineers (2-4, 2-3) upset the Saints (3-2, 3-2) in a Frontier Conference game in Helena.
