Prep cross country: Mead’s boys, girls win tiebreakers

Mead’s boys and girls were fit to be tied during a three-way Greater Spokane League cross country meet Wednesday at Central Valley.

Mead’s boys defeated the host Bears 24-32 and tied University at 28. Mead won the tiebreaker because its No. 6 runner, Colton Anderson, crossed before U-Hi’s No. 6.

U-Hi senior Isaac Barville (15 minutes, 53.78 seconds) won the individual title, holding off Mead senior Will Medellin (15:55.43).

Mead’s girls topped U-Hi 24-37 and tied with CV at 28. Again, on the tiebreaker, Mead’s No. 6, Delaney Phillips, finished before CV’s sixth runner.

The top three runners were CV junior Kearan Nelson (19:16.57), U-Hi sophomore Claire Dingus (19:23.22) and Mead junior Hannah Tomeo (19:24.36).

At Comstock Park, Katie Thronson (19:02.51 for 3 miles) guided a 1-5 sweep as the visiting Lewis and Clark girls defeated Ferris 15-40. Abby Smith (19:11.26) placed second as the first four Tigers across the line were sophomores. Ferris won the boys meet 24-31, although Tigers junior Zak Kindl (15:34.29) outkicked three Saxons runners. Ferris senior Erik Holm (15:51.76) was runner-up.

At Riverside State Park, Gonzaga Prep’s boys defeated Mt. Spokane 20-40 and Rogers 15-49. Mt. Spokane’s Hayden Dressel (16:17.30 for 5,000) held off G-Prep’s Turlan Morlan (16:24.00) for the individual title. In the girls race, champion Micaela Kostecka (18:59.60) led Mt. Spokane over G-Prep 20-41 and Rogers 15-50. G-Prep’s Natali Schwartzenberger (19:36.70) placed second.

Great Northern League

Individual champions Riley Turner (18:39.99) and Brittany Aquino (18:40.85) led East Valley to team wins at Clarkston. Turner, a sophomore, guided a Knights sweep of the top five places, topping senior Isaac Lamb by about 4 seconds. Aquino had a nearly 2-minute gap on fellow Knights senior Bailey Shea in a 20-39 team win.
