Regional cross country and district volleyball begins

The 4A and 3A regional cross country meets are Saturday at Wandermere Golf Course.

The top three 4A teams and top 15 individuals and the top two 3A teams and top 10 individuals advance to state, Nov. 7 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

In 4A boys, Ferris, Lewis and Clark, Mead and University will battle with Mid-Columbia Conference teams for state berths.

LC, Ferris and U-Hi are ranked eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. No MCC team is ranked.

In 4A girls, No. 3 LC and No. 5 Central Valley should have a tightly contested battle with Mead challenging for a berth.

In 3A boys, No. 1-ranked North Central, winner of nine straight state championships, is favored and should be pushed by second-ranked Kamiakin.

In 3A girls, No. 2 Mt. Spokane is heavily favored.

The 3A girls go first at 1. They’re followed by the 4A girls at 1:30, 3A boys at 2 and 4A boys at 2:30.

The District 8 4A tournament is expected to be more tightly contested than in any recent year.

Central Valley went through league undefeated, but just three games separated the top four teams. The tourney is Saturday at CV, where three teams earn berths to regionals.

First, though, is a loser-out match Thursday night to determine the fourth seed. Lewis and Clark visits Gonzaga Prep at 7.

In opening matches Saturday at 11, No. 1 CV takes on the LC/G-Prep winner and No. 3 University faces No. 2 Mead.

The winners meet at 2 to decide the title and top two seeds while the losers meet at the same time to decide the third regional berth.

The District 8 3A tourney is Saturday at top-seeded Mt. Spokane.

No. 3 North Central meets No. 2 Shadle Park in a loser-out match at 11. The winner takes on Mt. Spokane at 1 to decide seeding to regionals.

The District 7 2A tournament is Saturday at Pullman.

In loser-out matches, No. 5 West Valley faces No. 2 Cheney at 10 and No. 4 Clarkston takes on No. 3 East Valley at noon.

The winners meet in a loser-out match at 2 with the winner earning a berth to the subregional.

That winner then faces No. 1 Pullman at 4 to determine the district champion and seeding to subregionals.
