In brief: Jason Day, Jordan Spieth rolling in opposite directions at TPC Boston

From Staff And Wire Reports

GOLF: Brendon de Jonge opened with a 6-under 65 in the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday that allowed the Zimbabwean to wonder if this might be the week he breaks through with his first win.

De Jonge had a two-shot lead over nine players at TPC Boston, including Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson.

Jason Day, who needs a victory to become No. 1 in the world for the first time, played in the tougher morning conditions in Norton, Massachusetts, and shot a 68.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy had a 70, while Jordan Spieth had his third straight round over par. Spieth had eight bogeys in a round of 75.

Arizona sent a conditional seventh-round draft pick to Philadelphia for Barkley.

Titans trade veteran guard Andy Levitre to Falcons: The Atlanta Falcons acquired veteran guard Andy Levitre from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft and a future conditional pick.

Altidore scores two; U.S. rallies for win

Miscellany: Jozy Altidore scored a pair of second-half goals and the U.S. men’s national soccer team rallied to beat Peru 2-1 in an exhibition in Washington.

Preparing for next month’s one-game playoff against Mexico for a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup, the Americans fell behind in the 20th minute when Daniel Chavez’s shot caromed off a defender and looped over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Altidore dampened the mostly pro-Peruvian crowd of 28,896 at RFK Stadium when he earned a penalty kick in the 58th minute. The 25-year-old forward took the PK, which was saved, and scored on the rebound. Altidore finished his first multigoal match since June 2014 when he tapped home Gyasi Zardes’ cross in the 68th minute.

German canoeist Franziska Weber calls the floating weeds “unfair.” She said “we work four years for this moment, and to lose then because of plants. It’s hard.”
