Top 25 college football: No. 3 Alabama runs past No. 20 Wisconsin in opener

Derrick Henry rushed for 147 yards with three touchdowns and No. 3 Alabama ran away with a 35-17 victory over No. 20 Wisconsin in the season opener for both teams Saturday night in Arlington, Texas.

Jake Coker got the starting nod at quarterback for the Crimson Tide (1-0) and was 15 of 21 passing for 213 yards and a touchdown while playing until late in the third quarter.

In former offensive coordinator Paul Chryst’s first game as the Badgers’ head coach, they were held to 40 yards rushing. Wisconsin (0-1) averaged 264 yards per game on the ground over the previous five seasons.

(6) Auburn 31, Louisville 24: Will Muschamp’s defense made a couple of huge plays early for the Tigers (1-0) to offset three interceptions by Jeremy Johnson, and Auburn held off the Cardinals (0-1) in Atlanta.

The Tigers’ first TD was set up by an interception. Justin Garrett returned a fumble 82 yards to make it 14-0.

(11) Notre Dame 38, Texas 3: Malik Zaire passed for 313 yards in his first home start, and the Fighting Irish (1-0) held the Longhorns (0-1) to 163 yards of total offense in South Bend, Indiana.

Zaire was 19-of-22 passing with three touchdowns, including a 66-yard scoring strike to Will Fuller.

(12) Clemson 49, Wofford 10: Deshaun Watson threw for 194 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half and the Tigers moved to 30-0 against FCS opponents with a victory over Wofford (0-1) in Clemson, South Carolina.

Clemson (1-0) opened with a win for the seventh straight season.

(17) Mississippi 76, UT Martin 3: Chad Kelly threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a 20-yard touchdown to lead the Rebels past the Skyhawks (0-1) in Oxford, Mississippi.

Kelly, in his first start for the Rebels (1-0), completed 9 of 15 passes. Jaylen Walton ran for two touchdowns, including a 60-yarder on his first carry of the game.

(18) Arkansas 48, UTEP 13: Brandon Allen threw for a career-high 308 yards and matched his best with four touchdown passes as the Razorbacks stormed the Miners (0-1) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The senior, beginning his third year as the starter for the Razorbacks (1-0), threw for 256 yards and all four touchdowns in the first half.

(19) Oklahoma 41, Akron 3: Baker Mayfield passed for 388 yards and three touchdowns, and Joe Mixon had 142 yards from scrimmage to help the Sooners defeat the Zips (0-1) in Norman, Oklahoma.

Mayfield set an Oklahoma (1-0) record for yards passing in a season opener, surpassing the previous mark of 363 yards by current Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford in 2007.

(24) Missouri 34, SE Missouri 3: Kentrell Brothers had a career-best 16 tackles and blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown for the Tigers, who defeated the Redhawks (0-1) in Columbia, Missouri.

Maty Mauk threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter and freshman backup Drew Lock threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Hunt in the fourth for Missouri (1-0).

(25) Tennessee 59, Bowling Green 30: Jalen Hurd had three first-half touchdown runs, Alvin Kamara ran for two more scores, and the Volunteers beat the Falcons (0-1) in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tennessee (1-0) came in ranked for the first time since September 2012.
