Auditions

Spokane Symphony and State Street Ballet Nutcracker – Girls age 13 and older, arrive at 12:30 p.m. for 1 p.m. audition. Pointe shoes required. Boys and girls age 10 and older, 4-foot-10 to 5-foot-7, arrive at 1:15 p.m. for 1:45 p.m. audition. Boys and girls ages 8-12, 4 feet to 5-foot-2, arrive at 3:15 p.m. for 3:45 p.m. audition. Wheel Throwing-Beginning Only: Learn the basics of throwing on the wheel. Centering, basic shapes, trimming, handles. Two sessions: Wednesday, Sept. 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4 and Sept. 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12. For students ages 18 and older. $125/each session. Wheel Throwing-All Levels: Learn or review the basics, refining techniques and individual development. Lids, handles, spouts, vases, pitchers. Bring ideas and questions. Two sessions: Monday, Sept. 21, 28, Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, 6-8 p.m. and Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7, 10 a.m.-noon. $125/each session. Hand Building-All Levels: Do-it-yourself pottery tools and methods with practical applications. This class involves work with slabs, extruders and dies, texture and embossing with your own carved rollers, coggles (mold forms), stamps, etc. Monday, 21, 28, Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, 10 a.m.-noon. $125. Sculpture and Hand Building-All Levels: Learn or review the basics: wedging, pinch and coil, slab and extruder. Surface treatments and glazing are presented. Explore methods for making functional, non-functional and sculptural forms. The emphasis in this class is on organic, geometric, abstract or lifelike forms and figures. Bring your ideas to class. Upcoming classes include: Crystal Martin: Scaling Up Part 1 – Adult students will learn various methods on how to scale up small drawings for use in larger paintings or murals. Preliminary sketches will be created on a large scale to explore each method. Thursday, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, 10 a.m.-noon. $60. Scaling Up Part 2 – In Part 2 of Scaling Up, adult students will learn how to transfer their completed sketch onto a large canvas. Oils will be used to complete the painting. Oct. 8, 15, 22, 10 a.m.-noon. $60. Bernadette Vielbig: Reductive Landscape Drawing – This two-day drawing workshop is designed for students ages 14 and up with little to no drawing experience, but all levels are welcome. We will use charcoal, erasers and blending tools to create a dramatic evening landscape. All drawing materials will be supplied. If you have a drawing board, please bring it. Thursday, Sept. 24, 5:30-8:30 p.m. $70 plus $25 supply fee. Batik Workshop – This workshop will explore the basics of wax resist dyeing. Students, ages 16 and up, need not have any experience in textiles or dyes, but should come prepared to the first session with several simple design ideas that are no larger than 12-by-12 inches. Students should dress to get dirty and be ready to learn an exciting process-based technique. Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. $140 plus $55 supply fee. Beginning and Intermediate Drawing with Cynthia Montgomery: Adult students will learn to draw by developing eye-hand coordination and learning the perception of edges, relationships and light and shadow. Thursday, 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22. 1-3 p.m. $120. Drawing for Watercolors with Lynne Haines: The key ingredient in any watercolor is the understanding of drawing. For students ages 20 and up. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21. 2-4 p.m. $120. Drawing the Portrait with Katey Mandley: Students, high school students to adults, will work from a live model while they learn the basic geometry of the head through the use of line, shape, form and value. $120 plus $48 model fee. Thursday, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22. 6-8 p.m. Rachelle Hartvigsen: Introduction to Knitting: Rachelle will teach students ages 10 and up the basics of knitting. With your new skills, you will make a cowl or infinity scarf just in time for cooler weather. $105. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27. 7-8:30 p.m. Two at a Time Toe up Socks: Rachelle will teach adult students to custom fit socks as you knit them. $120. Thursday, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22. 7-9 p.m. Metal Clay Art Class with Anthony Gallaher: Students 16 years and older will learn the basics of working with metal clay including the different types of clays used, the tools needed and the firing process. Tools and resources will be provided to participants so that they can continue making wearable art jewelry. $80 plus $30 lab fee. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 30, Oct. 7, 6-8 p.m.

Social/Recreational and Education Activities for Adults with Disabilities – Classed offered include: wood shop, painting, ceramics, art and craft, reading and math, and computers. Call for artists

Vinyl Wrap Traffic Box Design - The city of Moscow and the Moscow Arts Commission are seeking vinyl wrap designs for traffic boxes and the public library book return box. This call is open to people 18 years of age or older who live in Latah, Nez Perce, Asotin and Whitman counties, or are Nez Perce or Coeur d’Alene tribal members. The selected artists will be paid a $100 stipend for each design selected. Fall Folk Festival’s 20th Anniversary - The design must include the words: Spokane, 20th Fall Folk Festival, 2015. The winning designer will receive $100. Design should be in Vector format or be reproducible original artwork and should use no more than four colors. A shirt color may be suggested. Submissions due Tuesday to ffftshirts@hotmail.com.

Palouse Plein Air - Plein air competitions involve painting outdoors in a specific area or region and then having those paintings exhibited in an art gallery. The seven-day painting competition begins Sept. 19. All painting mediums are welcome. Participants, age 18 and older, must paint on a stamped and dated painting surface. Participants are to register and get stamps at the following times and locations: (Sept. 19) 8 a.m.-noon at the Moscow Farmers Market at the City Information Tent, and (Sept. 21-24) 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Moscow City Hall on the first floor. Applications are available for pickup at Moscow City Hall, 206 E. Coeur d’Alene Art Grant Program – Three-year pilot program of the Coeur d’Alene Arts Commission seeks to widen arts and cultural participation and its expression. Program provides $500 to $1,000 for projects, opportunities and events that offer a potential arts or cultural impact within Coeur d’Alene.
