U.S. 195 poses dangers

We live in Eagle Ridge, just off U.S. 195, and must travel this highway to access the South Hill, downtown, North Side or Valley. My 16-year-old daughter will be driving soon, and I am extremely nervous at the thought of her navigating a high-speed roadway where cars enter or exit from various points with short merge and exit lanes.

The three fatalities on Sept. 5 at U.S. 195 and Thorpe Road reinforced my fears. My biggest concern, however, is the horrific merge of that highway and I-90, where you have a few yards to merge into 60 mph heavy traffic. I often have to come to a full stop and then accelerate from 0 to 60 in seconds. Could a few traffic barrels give us a longer dedicated lane?

New housing developments in west and south Spokane have increased traffic considerably, so this is a growing problem and more lives could be lost.
