Flag misconstrued
Many people try to disguise their hatred of a free America by attacking symbols linked to America’s proud heritage. The Confederate battle flag has been under attack since the tragic shootings in a South Carolina church because the alleged shooter held this flag in a personal photo.
The one evil event carried out by a sick-minded individual can hardly be associated with the flag Southern states used during the U.S. Civil War, although some will draw illogical conclusions based on their own bias and ignorance.
Since the Civil War, the “Rebel Flag” has become the symbol of a free thinker, one who looks away from conventional norms and community expectations. Displaying this flag today says, “I’m my own person; I live life my way, not yours.” It has little to do with slaves or repression of people of color.
If one comes up to any symbol they find offensive, simply ask the owner what do they mean by it instead of forming a wrong conclusion. The ensuing dialogue might enlighten everyone.
