Iran deal makes no sense
The Sept. 10 letter (“AIPAC flexes muscles”) critical of Israel and a pro-Israel American lobbying group working legally within our political system to block the current Iran nuclear deal doesn’t do justice to a healthy debate of the issue, but rather reflects personal bias.
Given Iran leadership’s numerous proclamations to annihilate Israel, deny the Holocaust and support Hezbollah and Hamas, why would anyone in their right mind question Israel’s right to limit Iran’s military capabilities?
My comment to the deal’s supporters is what specifically do you see as a benefit to the West, given the belligerency of Tehran during the past 40 years? While critics worry about external verifications, worthless self-inspections, release of funds to aid terrorist groups, delayed eventual development of nuclear arms, side deals for Russian arms etc., proponents spout “pie-in-the-sky” generalities about world peace after signing a piece of paper with religious extremists.
I would argue to use current sanctions for a stronger pro-Western deal and to encourage development of the restricted pro-democracy movement in Iran. Furthermore, if the deal is so good, why aren’t all details being released and a transparent discussion and vote in Congress being held?
