In brief: Newport woman killed in U.S. 2 crash

A 44-year-old woman killed in a three-car crash Saturday afternoon has been identified as Mary K. Juhnke, of Newport, Washington.

The Washington State Patrol said she was driving her Subaru Legacy in the wrong lane along U.S. Highway 2 in north Spokane County. Her car struck a Chevrolet Suburban.

The SUV’s driver had attempted to avoid a collision, according to the WSP. The driver and a passenger in the Suburban were not injured.

The Subaru then continued in the wrong lane and struck an Acura TSX head-on. The driver of the Acura was taken to a hospital.

Resident, two dogs escape house fire

A resident and two dogs escaped a house fire early Sunday morning in the 12100 block of East 10th Avenue in Spokane Valley.

A neighbor saw fire and smoke coming from the front of the home, awoke the resident and then called 911 for help, according to a Spokane Valley Fire Department news release.

Firefighters arrived and took two dogs from the home. They were treated for smoke inhalation. The resident was not hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
