Area roundup: Whitworth improves to 3-0 in NWC volleyball

Cassandra Mendoza led three players in double figures with 18 kills on Wednesday as Whitworth improved to 3-0 in Northwest Conference volleyball with a 3-1 victory over host Whitman (2-7, 0-3) at Walla Walla.

Nicole Leonard added 16 kills and Maddye Dinsmore had 40 assists, 16 digs and three aces for the Pirates (9-3 overall), who have won three consecutive matches and seven of eight.

• Jessica Schmautz finished with 15 kills and 11 digs while leading Community Colleges of Spokane (10-16, 2-0 Northwest Athletic Conference) to a 3-0 sweep over host Big Bend (6-11, 0-2) at Moses Lake.

College basketball

Gonzaga’s men’s team will hold Kraziness in the Kennel on Oct. 10 while the women’s team has scheduled Fan Fest for Oct. 17.

Kraziness will give the public its first look at the 2015-16 men’s team featuring All-American Kyle Wiltjer. Doors will open at 3 p.m. and the event will start at 4.

Fan Fest will operate under the same hours. The women’s team advanced to the Sweet 16 last season.

Men’s soccer

Raymond Ruano of Community Colleges of Spokane (4-2-2, 2-1-1) and Tanner Horton of North Idaho (4-2-2, 2-0-2) had the shutout during a Northwest Athletic Conference scoreless tie at Spokane Falls CC.

Junior hockey

The Castlegar Rebels (4-1-0) scored a pair of second-period goals and held off the Spokane Braves 3-2 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Castlegar, British Columbia.

Josh Fisher had one goal and one assist and Taylor Everhart added two assists for Spokane (1-4-0).

Football

The Spokane Shock signed linebacker Michael Reynolds (University of Kansas) and defensive linemen Ronnell Lewis (Oklahoma) and Ben Perry (Minnesota) in preparation for the 2016 Indoor Football League season.

Women’s golf

Idaho freshman Michelle Kim was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week after her fourth-place finish at Washington State’s Cougar Cup. Kim finished at 1-under-par 215 for three rounds to lead the Vandals to second place.
