Wenatchee teachers will vote on contract

Approval would avert strike

From Wire Reports

WENATCHEE – Wenatchee teachers will vote Saturday morning on the contract offer made Thursday by the Wenatchee School District. Details of the contract will be released after the vote.

The bargaining team for the Wenatchee Education Association, representing about 500 Wenatchee teachers and other employees, accepted the offer during the fourth day of mediated negotiations Thursday afternoon. The union’s executive committee later that day unanimously ratified the deal and agreed to send it on to the union membership with their approval, said Kris Cameron, union president. For final approval, the contract must be voted on by at least 20 percent of the membership with 60 percent approval.

The deal averted a possible strike.

Kelso teachers held in contempt

A judge on Friday ruled that striking teachers in Kelso are in contempt of court.

The judge said he would fine the union $2,000 a day if teachers don’t go back to work, KOIN-TV reported. The strike was in its eighth day Friday, but negotiations resumed Friday afternoon.

Teachers and other educators had been working without a contract in Kelso since June 30.
