In brief: Maya Moore carries Lynx into WNBA Finals

WNBA: Maya Moore stole Noelle Quinn’s pass with 3 seconds left, was fouled and made a free throw with 1.5 seconds and the visiting Minnesota Lynx beat the Phoenix Mercury 72-71, sending the Lynx to the WNBA Finals.

Moore had a career playoff-high 40 points to help Minnesota reach the title series for the fourth time in five seasons. Minnesota, the 2011 and 2013 champion, will face New York or Indiana in the best-of-five WNBA Finals.

• Fever rally for win vs Liberty in Game 2: Tamika Catchings scored 16 of her 25 points in the second half to rally the Indiana Fever over the New York Liberty 70-64 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals in Indianapolis.

The Fever trailed by 15 in the second half until the 36-year-old Catchings took over to tie the best-of-three series at 1-1.

New York’s Tina Charles led all scorers with 25 points and had 10 rebounds. The decisive Game 3 will be played Tuesday night in New York.

• January joins Griner on WNBA All-Defensive Team: Indiana’s Briann January (Lewis and Clark) joined Phoenix center Brittney Griner and Indiana forward Tamika Catchings on the WNBA All-Defensive Team.

Atlanta’s Angel McCoughtry and Los Angeles’ Nneka Ogwumike were also named.

Tsonga wins record 3rd Open de Moselle

Tennis: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2 to win the Open de Moselle tournament in Metz, France, for a record third time.

It was a 12th career title for Tsonga, who moved level with Simon and Richard Gasquet as the most titled Frenchmen in singles among current players.

• Radwanska takes Pan-Pacific Open title: Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska won the Toray Pan-Pacific Open title in Tokyo for the second time with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory over Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

The win by Radwanska – her first title since the Rogers Cup in Montreal last year – helped the seventh-seeded Pole gain revenge for her defeat by the 18-year-old Swiss player in this year’s Eastbourne final.

Toledo tops Watson at Pebble Beach

Golf: Esteban Toledo held off 66-year-old Tom Watson by a stroke in Pebble Beach, California, in the Champions Tour’s First Tee Open.

The 52-year-old Mexican player shot a 3-under 69 for a 9-under 206 total.

Watson was trying to break Mike Fetchick’s record as the oldest winner in tour history. Fetchick won the 1985 Hilton Head Seniors Invitational on his 63rd birthday.

Watson finished with a 67.

Cycling: Slovakian star Peter Sagan attacked with a mile left in the road world championships in Richmond, Virginia, then grit his teeth and powered down Broad Street to capture the gold.

It was the first medal in the men’s road world championships for Slovakia.
