Cyclist hospitalized after being hit by car Monday

A cyclist was hospitalized Monday night after being struck by a car three miles northwest of Spokane on state Route 291.

Robert B. Helferstay, 28, of Santan Valley, Arizona, was transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center around 6:30 p.m. after he was hit in the shoulder while riding south on the highway, the Washington State Patrol said.

Coby C. Adams, 37, of Spokane, was also traveling south on the highway when he hit Helferstay .

Adams was not injured, but his car was damaged and towed from the scene.

Helferstay was listed in satisfactory condition.

The Washington State Patrol said Adams will be charged with negligent driving.
