Injured North Carolina point guard Joel Berry II has a foot injury he suffered in Monday’s loss to Villanova in the NCAA championship game. Berry was on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot when the team returned to campus following the game. …Maggie Nichols’ bid to make the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team hit a roadblock when she was forced to withdraw from Saturday’s Pacific Rim championships with a knee injury.

Hired Columbia announced the hiring of Jim Engles as its men’s basketball coach on Tuesday. Engles returned to Columbia after spending eight years as the head coach of NJIT. Over the past six seasons at the school he went 100-88, including consecutive 20-win seasons. Prior to leading the Highlanders, he was an assistant at Columbia from 2003-08.

Announced Kentucky has announced that freshman Skal Labissiere will enter the NBA draft, the second Wildcat in the past four days to announce he will turn pro. …Marquette freshman Henry Ellenson has decided to enter the NBA draft and hire an agent, forgoing his remaining college eligibility. …Oakland University star Kay Felder has declared for the NBA draft. …Sophomore guard Wade Baldwin IV is foregoing his final two years of eligibility at Vanderbilt and entering the NBA Draft. …Florida State sophomore Xavier Rathan-Mayes will enter the NBA draft but not hire an agent.

Seized Two-time Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi is facing serious financial difficulties in Brazil, with authorities seizing trophies and racing cars from his personal museum. Fittipaldi’s press office released a statement saying that the difficulties are “the result of an unstable financial and political scenario” in Brazil, which is in political turmoil and facing its worst recession in decades.

Retired The Broncos’ Tyler Polumbus is retiring on top. The veteran of eight NFL seasons announced his retirement in a Facebook post.

Resigned Women’s basketball coach Connie Yori abruptly resigned after 14 seasons at Nebraska following an alleged investigation into how she treated her players. In a statement released by the school, Yori said only that she was leaving for personal reasons and thanked athletic director Shawn Eichorst for his support and leadership.

Introduced Former NBA player and coach Terry Porter has been formally introduced as the new coach at the University of Portland.
