Return to Christian roots
In an April 3 letter, Sally Jackson laments the demise of America. While she conveniently forgot that alcohol was such a large problem that it was outlawed, she is mostly correct in her observations. She also forgot to mention that this amendment was later repealed because it only served to make men like Al Capone rich.
While Sally lambasted pretty much all of modern society, she missed the entire reason for our decline. The preamble to the Constitution includes the phrase “our Creator has endowed us with certain inalienable rights.” In the very beginning, we considered ourselves to be a Christian nation. As such, we endeavored to model the behaviors exemplified by Jackson.
I would encourage Sally to read the headlines from a century ago in the Exchange section. They have mentioned the Spokane Socialist Party several times. Even then, there were people hard at work trying to topple our government. By the time World War II came around, these entities were firmly entrenched.
What our nation really needs is to return to its Christian roots. Instead of throwing out the baby with the bath water, we should focus more on Jesus and less on materialism.
