NIC’s Nicole Miller wins Highline golf

Nicole Miller of North Idaho College won the women’s division and led the Cardinals to a second-place finish in the Highline Showdown at Twin Lakes Golf & Country Club in Federal Way, Washington, that wound up a 36-hole run on Monday.

Miller had a 19-over 163, capped by a tournament-best 8-over 80 on Monday, for a one-stroke victory over Meg McMullen of team champion Bellevue, which edged NIC 513-516.

The Cardinals’ Amalia Negrette tied for seventh at 175, Erica Frazier was 12th at 178 and Mackenzie Phillips (Coeur d’Alene High) 15th at 179.

Hailey Warren of Community Colleges of Spokane (Mt. Spokane) finished fourth at 169 to lead the Sasquatch to fourth place at 536. Teammate Ashley Reitan (West Valley) shot 184 and Megan Cysewski (Lakeland) a 189 to placee 16th and tied for 19th, respectively.

Men: North Idaho was sixth at 633 and CC Spokane seventh at 639 behind Southwestern Oregon’s winning 602 at the Highline Showdown.

Braydon Swapp of NIC led the scoring for the area men, sharing ninth at 7-over 151. Jordan Bass of Spokane was next for the area schools, tied for 17th at 158.

Brady Campbell of Bellevue won at 2-over 141 as just five strokes separated the top 10.

Athletes of week

Kaytlyn Coleman, an Eastern Washington senior from Kennewick who won two events at the Pelluer Invitational last weekend in Cheney, was named the Big Sky Conference Track & Field Women’s Athlete of the Week.

Coleman won the hammer throw with a school and meet record 200 feet, 1 inch on her second-to-last throw, 19th best in NCAA Division I, and also won the shot put at 47-7 1/4 to earn her sixth weekly Big Sky honor of the school year and third of the outdoor season.

Eli Morgan, Gonzaga’s sophomore right-hander who collected his first collegiate shutout with a four-hit, 3-0 win over Portland, was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and struck out a career-high 11.

Donika Bashota, a Washington State sophomore who collected two of the biggest upsets of her collegiate career, was named the Pac-12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. Bashota, who has a school-record 36 singles victories, defeated 12th-ranked Klara Fabikova of California and No. 78 of Stanford with three-set victories.

Bloomsday

Runners, joggers and walkers planning to use the U.S. Postal Service to mail in their Bloomsday entries must have them postmarked by Tuesday to take advantage of the $18 entry free. Online entrants (www.bloomsdayrun.org) have until Sunday.
