Smoke detector quickly alerts neighbors to apartment fire

From staff reports

An early morning Spokane Valley apartment fire was extinguished with no injuries, thanks to a working smoke detector that quickly alerted residents.

A resident called firefighters to the building in the 15400 block of East Broadway Avenue early Wednesday morning after hearing a smoke detector in a downstairs unit, the Spokane Valley Fire Department said in a news release.

A total of 14 Fire Department vehicles responded to the fire and quickly had the flames under control. The resident of the apartment where the fire started was not home, and that unit is now unlivable, the release said.

The fire did not spread to other units in the building, the release said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
