College track and field: Whitworth’s Katie McKay breaks school record in women’s 400 meters

Senior Katie McKay broke her school record in the 400-meter dash and Whitworth’s men and women earned team victories Thursday at the Whitworth Twilight track and field meet.

McKay finished in 58.56 seconds to break her mark of 58.76 set last season.

Whitworth’s women scored 120 points to top second-place Lewis-Clark State College by 27 points. The Pirates men scored 124 to outdistance runner-up LCSC by 31.

Washington State junior Liz Harper placed seventh at the California Invitational Heptathlon in Azusa, California.

Harper scored 5,472 points, the seventh-best total in Cougars history. During the second day of competition, she long jumped 19 feet, 1/2 inch, threw the javelin 89-6 and ran the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 16.23 seconds.

WSU freshman Lindsey Schauble scored 4,650 points for 30th place.

Texas A&M’s Annie Kunz won the event with 5,904 points. The event drew 48 competitors.
