Trump lacks substance

Trump supporters have some legitimate gripes. But the candidate least likely to be able to address their concerns is Trump. He’s nothing more than a self-promoting marketing gimmick. A serious review of his speeches shows nothing but pandering exaggerations and sly emotional appeals. He is bereft of the substance required for actual governing.

His supporters claim that he is a rich successful businessman and knows how to get things done. He will bring jobs back to America. Yet his record discloses a string of failed business ventures, including Trump Steaks, Trump Airlines, Trump Real Estate, Trump University and several bankruptcies leaving hundreds of employees without jobs. If that’s success, who needs failure?

He says that he will bring jobs back. Yet he fails to explain how that will happen. Thomas Friedman, author of “The World Is Flat,” and others have argued that jobs go where economic conditions dictate. That’s why your clothing and other products we demand at affordable prices are largely made in Asia, where wages are a fraction of wages here. Those jobs aren’t coming back.

Finally, Trump says that he is a Washington outsider. Here I agree. He should remain an outsider.
