Education notebook: Ferris teacher earns national excellence award

Ferris High School English language development teacher Mandy Manning has been named the Washington recipient of the National Education Association Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence.

Manning was selected based on her excellence in professional practice, advocacy for the teaching profession, community engagement, professional development and attention to diversity.

Manning will travel to the NEA Foundation’s Annual Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D.C., and moves forward in the national competition.

She is also an NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellow and will complete a fellowship that includes a workshop in Washington, D.C., and an international field study in the summer 2017.

LC Drama heads over the rainbow

Lewis and Clark High School’s Tiger Drama’s production of “The Wizard of Oz,” which follows Dorothy and her friends as they travel to Emerald City and features such songs as “Over the Rainbow,” “If I Only Had a Brain” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” opens Thursday.

The cast includes Chloe Forsberg and CaraLee Howe (Dorothy), Ilan Hernandez (Scarecrow), Ethan Goins (Tinman), Eric Rorholm (Lion), Julian Lee (Wicked Witch), Beth Lambert (Glinda) and Caleb McKen (The Wizard).

The show is choreographed by Brittany Mendoza-Pena, musically directed by Howe and staged managed by Emma Lyons.

Performances are tonight and Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. at the school, 521 W. Fourth Ave. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door.

Auction benefits Northwest Christian

Northwest Christian Schools will hold its 23rd annual benefit auction, “An Evening with the Classics,” on Saturday.

The event includes a buffet dinner and silent and live auctions featuring Seattle Seahawks tickets and merchandise, a Gonzaga basketball ticket package, a natural gas fire pit, handmade crafts, a golf tour package and an already trained chocolate labradoodle puppy.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at nwcs.org/auction. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 5104 E. Bernhill Road.

Preschool celebrates anniversary, teacher

Beautiful Savior Lutheran Preschool will hold an open house Tuesday to celebrate the school’s 45th year and Pam Larson’s 42nd year of teaching.

Parents will be able to register their children for the preschool and day care programs for the 2016-17 school year. There will also be games and ice cream. Former students and families interested in seeing the school are welcome.

The open house is 5:30-7 p.m. at 4320 S. Conklin St.

Chamber honors educator Byrd

Cheney High School’s Bobby Byrd was selected as the West Plains Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year at the chamber’s Best of the West ceremony.
