Noise drives us away

A recent article and follow-up letter on restaurant noise only touched on one side of the noise problem.

My wife and I recently were shopping at a national retailer in North Town, she was looking for some new spring clothes. The music in the women’s department was so loud, we complained to two clerks. They said it bothered them too but that was the way management wanted it.

We walked out. We tried a couple of specialty shops, a few feet in the door we knew it was not for us. We have found similar problems in thrift stores, antique shops and a grocery chain.

The trend today is not background music but in-your-face (ears) noise. I don’t know if music attracts customers, but I do know it drives some away. We spend where we are comfortable and let management know when we are not.
