Police disarm homemade explosive found on north Spokane street

Spokane police removed a homemade explosive from a north Spokane street Sunday afternoon.

A concerned man reported the explosive near the intersection of North Cincinnati Street and East Rockwell Avenue, police spokeswoman Officer Teresa Fuller said. He told dispatchers he saw something in the road the night before and threw it in a trash can, thinking it was a car part.

He had second thoughts the following day and looked back in the trash, Fuller said. That’s when he saw “what appeared to be a fuse sticking out of it” and called 911.

The department’s explosive disposal unit responded and disarmed the device, Fuller said. She declined to describe it more specifically.

She said police continue to investigate, but it’s unlikely they’ll be able to find out the source of the device since it may have been sitting in the road for several days.

“It would be pretty difficult for us to nail down where it had come from,” she said.
