Education Notebook: U-Hi presents musical play ‘Evita’

University High School’s production of “Evita” premieres Thursday. The musical features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.

The story of Eva “Evita” Peron, the first lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952, is told through the eyes of Che Guevara. Caitlin McLennan plays Evita; Evan Figuracion plays Guevara; and Brady Magruder plays Evita’s husband, Argentine President Juan Peron.

Mallory Carbon and Mikala Lindgren helped with the Argentinian-style choreography. The rest of the cast and crew is rounded out by 60 Central Valley School District students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Performances are Thursday through Saturday and May 5-7 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 online at www.cvsd.org and $14 at the door.

Reunion set Friday for Adams’ staff

Past and present staff from Adams Elementary School in the Central Valley School District are invited to a reunion Friday at Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene, 15515 E. 20th Ave., Spokane Valley, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

WV team to compete in robotics meet

West Valley High School’s FIRST Robotics team, “Chuck,” is one of three Eastern Washington teams currently competing in the FIRST World Championship, April 27-30 in St. Louis.

The FIRST competitions work to inspire youth by giving them experience in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.

Pullman’s 4-H Palouse Area Robotics team, “SciBorgs,” and Palouse High School’s “VIKotics” are also competing at the world championship.

Cheney FBLA entries place at state

Cheney High School’s Future Business Leaders of America students recently competed in the 2016 Northeast Regional Winter Conference, which was at Eastpoint Church in Spokane Valley.

Fifty-six of the club’s 67 attending members placed in the top six. These students were then eligible to compete at the State Business Leadership Conference in Spokane, which was April 20-23.

Northwood names assistant principal

Northwood Middle School has selected Jay Tyus as its new assistant principal. Tyus is replacing administrator Sue Hogue, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Tyus currently works as the principal of Tonasket Middle School. He will begin working at Northwood on July 1.
