Gonzaga drops baseball series opener to BYU

The Gonzaga University baseball team began a series between two teams atop the West Coast Conference standings Thursday night, falling 11-2 to BYU at Miller Field in Provo, Utah.

Gonzaga’s Brandon Bailey entered the game with a 1.57 ERA, second-lowest in the WCC, but allowed five earned runs in four innings and took the loss.

With the loss, Gonzaga fell percentage points behind BYU in the conference standings. The Cougars are 11-5 (.688) in WCC action while Gonzaga fell to 12-7 (.632). GU is still ahead of the Cougars by one WCC win.

The third-ranked Zags created some separation late in the first half and controlled the second for a 94-71 victory in front of a packed house of 6,000 Thursday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
