Spokane Shadow women open season on Sunday

Soccer fans will see many familiar faces when the new Shadow women’s team takes the field this season.

Nine college seniors and recent graduates – including former Gonzaga Prep star and current professional Megan Lindsay – will be key performers for the Shadow, who open their first Northwest Premier League season on Sunday in Yakima.

“It looks to be the start of an exciting group of women to represent Spokane,” said coach Kevin Moon, who will add more college and developmental players during the season.

The Shadow women kick off at 2 p.m. at Marquette Stadium in one of three opening-day matches for the seven-team NWPL.

The match is first of a double-header that includes the Shadow men, who’ll open the defense of their back-to-back Evergreen Premier League titles against the Yakima Hoppers.

Both teams play at home on May 7 at Spokane Falls Community College Stadium. The women will play Twin Cities Union at 4:30 p.m. and the men face Vancouver Victory at 7 p.m.

In Lindsay, the Shadow have one of the area’s most successful current players. After scoring 41 goals at Seattle Pacific, she played professionally in Europe. She also played for the Seattle Sounders Women in the W-League from 2011-13 and briefly with the Spokane Shine in 2010.

Another big addition is former Mead High star Marissa Mykines, who played at the University of Illinois from 2008-11 and was an all-Big Ten selection. Mykines played professionally overseas in Sweden and briefly with Seattle Reign in the 2013 preseason tour in Japan as well as with Vancouver Whitecaps and Bay Area Breeze, where she was named Offensive MVP.

Other additions are Katie Cashman, a standout defender at Eastern Washington University; Sarah Cox, four-year contributor at Gonzaga from 2008-11; Averi Hallman, a former star at Mt. Spokane and the University of Memphis; Allison Jordan, a Mead product who plays at Eastern Oregon; Tasha Luu, formerly at Colville High and EWU; Tiara Pittman-Thomas, a midfielder at Washington State from 2008-11; and Kelli Zakrewski, a high-scoring forward at Cheney High and Seattle Pacific.
