Gonzaga’s White preseason All-WCC soccer pick

Gonzaga men’s soccer standout Ben White was named to the Preseason All-West Coast Conference team selected by the league’s coaches, conference officials announced Thursday.

White, a junior who also earned All-WCC first-team honors last season, was a key part of Gonzaga’s squad on both ends of the field last season. A defender, White helped the team rank third in the league in goals-against average at 1.14 and tie for first in the league in fewest goals allowed at 21.

On offense, White was a force, scoring a team-high four goals and ranking second on the team with nine points. His four goals ranked in a tie for sixth in the league. White was also second on the team with 32 shots and 12 shots on goal.

The WCC also released the preseason coaches poll, which was led by Santa Clara with 45 points and four first-place votes. Gonzaga was selected to finish seventh in the league with 13 points. Four teams received at least one first-place vote in the poll.

Last season, Gonzaga finished with a 7-10-1 record, including a 2-5-0 mark in WCC play. Along with White, the Zags also return leading scorer and All-WCC honorable mention selection Jakob Granlund along with WCC All-Freshman Team honoree Garrett Wilson.
