Area roundup: Howell’s 27 points leads Whitman over Whitworth

Tim Howell scored 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting and Whitman beat Whitworth 79-65 in a Northwest Conference matchup in Walla Walla on Tuesday.

JoJo Wiggins had 15 points and Jack Stewart added 11 for Whitman.

Whitworth (4-1, 1-1) was led by Christian Jurlina with 18 points and eight rebounds, and Kyle Roach added 11 points.

Whitman (5-0, 2-0) raced out to a 20-6 lead and led 44-29 at intermission. The Pirates cut the deficit to seven on a layup by Roach with just over seven minutes left, but a six-point spurt pushed it back to 16 with 1:47 to go.

Women’s basketball

Emily Rommel scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to help Whitman (7-0) defeat Whitworth (1-4) 61-50 in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams in Walla Walla.

Callie Harwood led Whitworth with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Grace Douglas added 12 points. Chelsi Brewer scored 11 points and Maegen Martin added 10 for Whitman.

A seven-point run by Whitman midway through the third quarter pushed the lead to 17 at 46-29.

Players of the week

For the second week in a row, Eastern Washington junior Bogdan Bliznyuk was selected as the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for men’s basketball, sharing the honor with Montana’s State’s Tyler Hall.

Bliznyuk had 31 points and 12 rebounds as Eastern prevailed 93-88 in a double-overtime victory at Seattle U.

It was his third 30-point performance in his last five games.

The Big Sky named Eastern Washington’s Delaney Hodgins Co-Player of the Week for women’s basketball after picking up a pair of 20-point performances on the road against Boise State and Cal State Northridge, along with Weber State’s Emily Drake.

It is the second straight week that Hodgins has earned a Big Sky Player of the Week honor.

Hodgins’ double-digit scoring streak is at 23 straight games, while she has now scored 20-or-more points in each of her last four contests.

Season honors

Three Whitworth Pirates were voted on to the D3football.com All-West Region team: QB Ian Kolste (second team), RB Duke DeGaetano and KR Jordan Pride (third team).

Kolste led Division III in pass completions per game, passing yards and passing yards per game (379.0), set a host of team records and tied a team record for touchdown passes (29).

DeGaetano ran for 1,001 yards and set a season record for rushing touchdowns (21).

Pride averaged 29.4 yards per kick return and was the only conference player who returned a kick for a touchdown.

Gonzaga senior Jakob Granlund was named to the NCAA Division I All-Far West Region third team.

Granlund led the Bulldogs in points and assists. His 14 points were sixth in the WCC and his six assists were fourth.

Washington State’s Kyra Holt was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Pacific North All-Region 14-member first team.

Holt is a two-time All-Pac-12 volleyball first-team selection and became the fifth Cougar in school history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. Holt holds school records in points, is second-best all-time in kills, fifth in aces , and seventh in digs.

Kousal to Worlds

Spokane Chiefs forward Pavel Kousal was selected to compete for the Czech Republic in the 2016 World Junior A Challenge Dec. 11-17 in Bonnyville, Alberta.

The Czechs face off against Canada East to kick off the tournament on Dec. 11.

Kousal has scored seven goals and two assists in 24 games so far during his rookie season with the Chiefs.

Rodeo

Tyson Durfey won tie-down roping with a time of 7.40 in round six of the 2016 National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas.

Shane Proctor was sixth in bull riding with a score of 83.0 aboard Red Image out of Summit Pro Rodeo. Pamela Capper didn’t place with a time of 18.79 in barrel racing.
