Teen carrying BB rifle causes alarm in North Spokane

Multiple reports of a person walking around with a rifle prompted the lock-down of North Central High School and Garfield Elementary School for a little over an hour early Tuesday afternoon.

Every time police would respond to a report of a man with a gun they would not find anyone, but then another call would come in giving a new location, said Spokane Police Department spokesman Officer Shane Phillips.

A 14-year-old carrying a realistic looking BB rifle was caught at the Burger King on North Division near Mission Avenue. “He was compliant,” Phillips said. “There was no drama.”

The teen was taken home to his parents and advised not to carry around a realistic looking weapon in public. He was not arrested.

“He did not brandish it, he did not threaten anyone,” Phillips said. “Because of that there were no charges that were appropriate.”
