Batik teacher Nicholas Sironka is opening a new gallery and batik teaching space on Spokane’s North Side.

Art By Sironka - Batik Art Made Easy is celebrating a grand opening at 6 p.m. Friday at 9423 N. Division St., just north of the Y.

Sironka, who is a Maasai from Kenya, first came to Spokane in 1999, for a friend’s wedding. He’s since taught batik at Whitworth University, brought Maasai dance troupes to town, and served as artist-in-residence at Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.

Friday’s opening event will offer Kenyan style tea, and guests can register for January batik classes. For information, visit www.batikartistsironka.com.
