Enforce, strengthen gun laws

Paul Carpenter’s Jan. 20 letter cogently argues that the existing gun laws should be strictly enforced, with no more plea deals. As a gun owner with a permit to carry and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I agree.

But I would urge our elected representatives to go a step further by also strengthening those laws. For such violations as illegal possession of a firearm, providing a firearm to someone not permitted to have one, and having or claiming to have a firearm in the commission of, or attempt to commit, any crime, there should be mandatory prison sentences to be served in addition to and consecutive to any other penalties.

To give some latitude for varying circumstances, I’d suggest: five to 10 years for first offense, 10 to 20 years for second offense, and 20 years to life for third offense. Because such enhanced laws are only aimed at those who violate existing laws, I would like to believe that the National Rifle Association would enthusiastically support such legislation (or would explain in detail why it will not).
