Troupe brings Chinese circus theatrics to INB

With aerialists, contortionists and jugglers, the New Shanghai Circus is a sight to behold.

“It’s a good-looking show, from the costumes and the sets and the lighting,” said Jack Lucas, president of West Coast Entertainment, which is bringing the show to the INB Performing Arts Center.

The two-hour show draws on 2,000 years of Chinese acrobatics, with modern acts, too. There will be human pyramids atop bicycles, acrobats diving through hoops, men juggling hats, and women dancing with yo-yos.

It’s a great outing with the kids, Lucas said.

“When we set the show up, we kept that in mind: It has to be affordable so that mom and dad can bring the kids,” he said.

He’s hoping to bring more cultural performances at family-friendly prices to Spokane.

“It’s fun to see parents bring their kids, because there’s just nothing like having a venue that has a lot of kids in it. Because there’s so much energy and excitement in the room,” Lucas said.

“I always love to see the kids in the theater.”

For those who are looking forward to a more American cultural phenomenon on Sunday, not to worry.

“The show starts at 1 o’clock. They’ll be out of there in time for the start of the Super Bowl,” Lucas said.
