At least 30 injured, several critically, in bus crash

MADISON, Conn. – A charter bus driving through a snowstorm to a casino flipped onto its side Monday, injuring at least 30 people, several of them critically, and closing the northbound side of Interstate 95 in Connecticut.

The bus, which was on its way from New York City to the Mohegan Sun casino, crashed around 12:30 p.m. in Madison, east of New Haven.

Mark D’Antonio, a Yale-New Haven Hospital spokesman, said the hospital was told to expect 30 patients, six of whom were listed in critical condition by first responders at the scene.

Cody Chapman, a spokesman for the casino in Uncasville, said the bus is owned by Dahlia Inc. and operated by VMC East Coast.

State police trooper Kelly Grant said they believe there were more than 60 people on the bus at the time of the accident. The uninjured were taken to a nearby gymnasium.

Video from near the scene showed the bus on its side off the right shoulder of the highway.

The accident occurred during a snowstorm that was expected to drop up to a foot of snow on parts of the state.

Chapman said other buses from the New York area were rerouted back to the city until weather conditions improve.
