Eight teams from Spokane Public Schools competed at the FIRST Lego League state championships at Eastern Washington University last month. Linwood Elementary School and Brown Elementary Schools won for their inventions.

Linwood’s Big Bot Theory’s invention, the Eco-Compactor 9000, won the Project: Innovative Solution award and was a Global Innovation Award nominee, which gives them a chance to compete for the national prize.

The team included Nathaniel Nickell, Jonah Nichols, Brenna Houk, Devon Thompson, Yakobo Mleha, Jonathan Love, Jacob Smith, Jessi Brown, Madeline Flett and Olivia Rodriguez.

Browne’s team, the Browne Bear Groovy Bots, researched ways to reduce waste in the lunchroom and came up with a three-part solution that reduced waste by 30 percent, earning the team the Project: Presentation award.

The team included Jordan Anderson, Johnny Curtis, Jaydin Cuzick, Arona Vashon, Jayce Greenland, Zane Theirolf, Ben Watson and Genevieve Janda.

The FIRST Lego League is a robotic competition for elementary and middle schools students aged 9-14. The program hopes to inspire students to learn more about science and technology and consider careers in those fields.
