Announced Steve Spagnuolo will be returning as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator. Coach Ben McAdoo announced his staff Tuesday, more than a month after replacing Tom Coughlin. Twelve of the assistants were on Coughlin’s staff, including all three coordinators.

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo says he is going to retire. Mayo posted a 90-word statement on Instagram with the caption “Retiring a Patriot.”

Olympic gold-medal skier Picabo Street is headed for a May trial on misdemeanor domestic violence charges after her lawyer said she turned down a plea deal in the Utah case. Street was defending herself from her combative 76-year-old father and expects to be cleared of the charges at trial.

Agreed Injured Houston DH Evan Gattis and the Astros have avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $3.4 million, one-year contract. The deal called for a $3.3 million salary this year and includes a $5.2 million club option for 2017 with a $100,000 buyout.

Scheduled Carolina middle LB Luke Kuechly is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. Kuechly’s status for the Panthers’ OTAs and minicamp is uncertain, but the three-time Pro Bowler is expected to be fully recovered before the start of training camp in July.

Released The Lions released RB Joique Bell, less than a year after he signed a two-year deal with former general manager Martin Mayhew.

Suspended Oakland pitcher Brandon Mann was suspended for 80 games for testing positive for Ostarine and Atlanta pitcher Richie Tate for 100 games for testing positive for a drug abuse for the third time. Both were in violation of baseball’s minor league drug testing program.

Settled Montana will pay former University of Montana QB Jordan Johnson $245,000 to settle claims that a rape investigation against him was mishandled. He was accused of raping a female acquaintance in 2012. A jury acquitted him in 2013.

Withdrew The No.1-ranked Serena Williams has withdrawn from her second consecutive tournament, saying that she will miss next week’s Qatar Open because of the flu.

Departed Notre Dame starting RT Steve Elmer is done with football even though he has a year of eligibility left. Elmer released a letter on the school’s website explaining his decision to pursue an unspecified career opportunity in the Washington, D.C., area.
