In brief: Duke stuns North Carolina

Top 25: Grayson Allen scored 23 points and freshman Derryck Thornton had a clinching block on the final play to help No. 20 Duke edge No. 5 North Carolina 74-73 on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Allen hit a pair of free throws with 1:09 left for the lead on a night when Duke (20-6, 9-4 ACC) trailed most of the way.

Then, on UNC’s final possession, Thornton blocked Joel Berry II’s shot in the lane.

Brice Johnson had 29 points and 19 rebounds for the Tar Heels (21-5, 10-3).

Texas Tech knocks off No. 3 Oklahoma: Aaron Ross scored 17 points, Keenan Evans added 14 and Texas Tech beat No. 3 Oklahoma 65-63 in Lubbock, Texas, for the Red Raiders’ third straight victory over a Top 25 team, a program first.

Jordan Woodard scored 25 points and Buddy Hield added 16 for the Sooners (20-5, 8-5).

Jack scores 19 as Penn State tops No. 4 Iowa: Donovon Jack scored 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting, and Penn State beat No. 4 Iowa 79-75 in State College, Pennsylvania.

The Nittany Lions (13-13, 4-9 Big Ten) also beat No. 22 Indiana 68-63 on Feb. 6.

Peter Jok scored 28 points for Iowa (20-6, 11-3).

Panarin’s hattie leads Hawks over Rangers

NHL: Rookie sensation Artemi Panarin scored his first hat trick and visiting Chicago rallied to beat New York 5-3 after blowing a two-goal lead.

Pominville helps slumping Wild beat Flames: Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist to help slumping Minnesota beat the Flames 5-3 in Calgary, Alberta.

The Wild have won their first two games under interim coach John Torchetti after a 1-11-2 stretch that cost coach Mike Yeo his job.

The Flames have lost three straight.

Bettman upholds Wideman suspension: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upheld Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman’s 20-game suspension for cross-checking a linesman.

The NHL Players’ Association said it would further appeal.

The suspension is the second-longest in NHL history for abusing an official.

Bosh doesn’t practice, won’t play Friday

NBA: All-Star forward Chris Bosh was not with the Miami Heat for practice Wednesday, and the team says he will not play at Atlanta on Friday.

The Heat are still not commenting about Bosh going back on blood thinners. Bosh missed the final 30 games of last season with a clot.

Hawks’ Splitter to miss Olympics: Tiago Splitter won’t be able to play for the home team at the Rio Olympics.

Atlanta’s center will need eight months to recover from hip surgery, costing him a spot on the Brazilian team.

Splitter says “everybody wants to play in the Olympics when you’re playing at home. It’s really hard” to sit out the games, which begin Aug. 5.

Kings fire assistant coach Walberg: The Sacramento Kings fired assistant coach Vance Walberg.

The Kings are in 10th place in the Western Conference with a 22-31 record. They are 4 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.

Jazz president Rigby to retire end of season: Utah Jazz President Randy Rigby said he plans to retire from the position at the end of the season.

Rigby has served as president of the Jazz for nine seasons and has been with the parent company since 1986.

Gophers dismiss swingman Morris

Miscellany: Minnesota dismissed swingman Carlos Morris for conduct detrimental to the team.

He will remain on scholarship for the remainder of the season.

Morris was the team’s fourth-leading scorer at 9.8 points a game.

L.A. vows privately financed 2024 Olympic bid: Organizers of Los Angeles’ bid for the 2024 Olympics are promising a prudent and responsible approach to running the games that would be entirely privately financed.

In a 64-page report submitted to the IOC, organizers said that within three weeks of launching last September they secured $35 million in cash commitments from private donors.

Ronaldo ends drought in win over Roma: Cristiano Ronaldo ended his away scoring drought and Real Madrid won 2-0 at Roma in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the Champions League in Rome.

The win marked a successful debut for Zinedine Zidane as Madrid’s manager.

It was Ronaldo’s first goal on the road since Nov. 29 and his 12th overall this season.
